God’s Relentless Grace – A Mirror Into Jonah’s Heart (Part 5)

Preacher:
Passage: Jonah 4
Service Type:

Jonah is perhaps one of the best known, and debated, books of the Bible.  Unlike other prophetic books, this book focuses on the prophet himself.

Yet, this book is not only about Jonah or a giant fish.  It’s about us too. Whether we like to admit it or not, we are a lot like Jonah.  Jonah runs from and completely disobeys God. We also run from and disobey him.  Jonah reluctantly does what God told him to do.  We can that same attitude towards the things God wants us to do.  Jonah prefers personal comfort over heartfelt trust.  We are creatures of habit as well and prefer what we  know rather than trust the unknown.

Yet, amidst Jonah’s disobedience, we also see the amazing mercy, kindness and grace of God.  We see that God loves Jonah so much that he repeatedly pursues a relationship with him in spite of his long list of failures.  As we study the book of Jonah, we will see that God similarly loves us and actively pursues a relationship with us as well.

This book is a call to repentance, a call to mission, a call to love those unlike ourselves and a call to trust in God.
