Jesus I Am Statements in John

IAMStatements960x295

It is obvious from the opening verses of the gospel of John that the apostle wants us to understand that Jesus is God.  Throughout the gospel, Jesus makes various claims His divinity by using the phrase I Am seven times.  This would have be absolutely clear to his Jewish listeners because, I Am, was the personal name God used in his encounter with Moses in the burning bush.

Jesus develops things a bit further and when he joins this phrase to tremendous Biblical metaphors.  In doing so, he expresses His saving relationship toward the world and shows that He is everything we need.
